About this resource

This activity s meant to accompany the longer lesson "To Flood or Not to Flood: How to Prevent a Natural Disaster Resulting from an Earth or Weather Event." The students will watch a PowerPoint presentation to learn about how an ecosystem has various organic and inorganic materials that interdepend on each other to create balance. After the students watch the presentation, they will be asked to match ecosystem cause and effect explanation cards. The cause cards will have a scenario that explains how an organic or inorganic material became out of balance in the ecosystem. The effect card explains how the scenario affected the ecosystem and will also have an accompanying problem-solving question that the students will have to answer once they have found their match. Each student will be given one card. They will read their card and then move around the room talking to other students to determine if their cards match. Once they have found their match, they will work together to answer the question listed on the effect card. This learning activity teaches students about the interdependence of the organic and inorganic material within an ecosystem, challenges them to think critically about cause and effect real life scenarios, and generate solutions to problems through teamwork and interpersonal communication strategies.
