About this resource

Protecting sea life from human waste and garbage is a top priority and currently, plastic straws are seen as the enemy of sea turtles in particular (https://tinyurl.com/y7bw2n3d). How do we create a safe alternative to plastic straws instead of banning them so we are conscious of people with disabilities and their needs? Design a reusable straw out of any material you choose. Why is this a sustainable alternative to plastic straws? Create a one page document outlining your design plan, include pictures, resources, and references as needed.

Modifications for all Learners: All students are provided with written and verbal directions to complete this activity. Computers are provided for word processing as needed.

Related Curriculum / Common Core Standard

AASL Main Standard(s):

III. COLLABORATE Work effectively with others to broaden perspectives and work toward common goals. A. Think - Learners identify collaborative opportunities by: 3. Deciding to solve problems informed by group interaction.

V. EXPLORE Discover and innovate in a growth mindset developed through experience and reflection. B. Create - Learners construct new knowledge by: Problem solving through cycles of design, implementation, and reflection.

NGSS Main Related Engineering Design Standard: HS-ETS1-2. Design a solution to a complex real-world problem by breaking it down into smaller, more manageable problems that can be solved through engineering.

What students will do

  1. Students will use collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity to design an environmentally sustainable straw for EVERYone.
  2. Students will consider those who have disabilities when designing the reusable straw.

 To use collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity to design a solution to the problem.

How learning is assessed

  1. Students used collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity to design an environmentally sustainable straw for EVERYone.
  2. Students considered those who have disabilities when designing the reusable straw.
