About this resource

Students will explore safety features that are already included in a diving suit and brainstorm ways to enhance or add to those safety features. Students may research various safety features (which may add more time), or come up with new ideas and inventions that may enhance pre-existing features. Students can work in groups to discuss what makes something safe and potential dangers divers face.

Modifications for All Learners: Verbal and written directions should be given. Developing a prototype of one of their ideas may challenge students further.

Related Curriculum / Common Core Standard

AASL Main Standard(s):

V. EXPLORE Discover and innovate in a growth mindset developed through experience and reflection. B. Create - Learners construct new knowledge by: 1. Problem solving through cycles of design, implementation, and reflection.

III. COLLABORATE Work effectively with others to broaden perspectives and work toward common goals. A. Think - Learners identify collaborative opportunities by: 3. Deciding to solve problems informed by group interaction.

IV. CURATE Make meaning for oneself and others by collecting, organizing, and sharing resources of personal relevance. A. Think - Learners act on an information need by: 2. Identifying possible sources of information.

Related STEM Area: Engineering, problem-solving, creativity, critical thinking

NGSS Main Related Engineering Design Standard:

3-5-ETS1-1. Define a simple design problem reflecting a need or a want that includes specified criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or cost. 3-5-ETS1-2. Generate and compare multiple possible solutions to a problem based on how well each is likely to meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.

What students will do

  1. Students will identify 10 new safety features that could be added to a divers wetsuit.
  2. Students will work in groups to identify ways to make diving safer.
  3. Students will discuss solutions with classmates.

Explore the creative process by problem solving and thinking creatively.

Resources Needed

Materials for experimentation, graph paper, computers, whiteboards for brainstorm.

How learning is assessed

  1. Students have identified 10 new safety features that could be added to a divers wetsuit.
  2. Students have successfully worked in groups to identify ways to make diving safer.
  3. Students have discussed their solutions with classmates.
