About this resource

Students completing this thinking challenge will design a bag that can be carried on a different part of the body other than your arms/shoulders, back, or waist. Students will design a new type of bag they can carry with little effort. Students need to think critically about how the bag can be carried and how it could be used and for what. Encourage students to come up with a use and purpose for the bag before coming up with a design, as that may affect how the bag is carried. Encourage students to come up with their own ideas and them compare with others. To take this one step further students can combine ideas to come up with a better solution. You may also choose to have students make a prototype. Who might benefit or need this?

Modifications for All Learners: Verbal and written directions should be given. Developing a prototype of one of their ideas may challenge students further.

Related STEM Area: Engineering, problem-solving, creativity, critical thinking

NGSS Main Related Engineering Design Standard:

3-5-ETS1-1. Define a simple design problem reflecting a need or a want that includes specified criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or cost.

What students will do

  1. Students will design a bag that can be carried on a different part of the body other than their arms/shoulders, back, or waist.
  2. Students compare and contrast designs with classmates.
  3. Students participate in discussion with classmates.

Explore the creative process by thinking critically and experimenting.

Resources Needed

Materials to build prototype, planning/brainstorming materials, whiteboards, paper, markers, graph paper, etc...

How learning is assessed

  1. Students have designed a bag that can be carried on a different part of the body other than their arms/shoulders, back, or waist.
  2. Students have compared their own design to classmate's designs.
  3. Students have discussed their ideas with classmates.
