About this resource

Students completing this thinking challenge will come up with a shirt that they believe will help them run faster. Students can use material to experiment as well as come up with new technologies that may be incorporated into their design. Students should be encouraged to think of more than just material of the shirt, but rather new inventive devices that could be incorporated into the design. Students may experiment with the materials to help them think about aerodynamics as well as design. This could be taken one step further by having students build a prototype of the shirt design and test their product.

Modifications for All Learners: Verbal and written directions should be given. Developing a prototype of one of their ideas may challenge students further.

Related Curriculum / Common Core Standard

AASL Main Standard(s):

I. INQUIRE Build new knowledge by inquiring, thinking critically, identifying problems, and developing strategies for solving problems. A. Think - Learners display curiosity and initiative by: 2. Recalling prior and background knowledge as context for new meaning.

IV. CURATE Make meaning for oneself and others by collecting, organizing, and sharing resources of personal relevance. B. Create - Learners gather information appropriate to the task by: 1. Seeking a variety of sources.

V.EXPLORE Discover and innovate in a growth mindset developed through experience and reflection. B. Create - Learners construct new knowledge by: 2. Persisting through self-directed pursuits by tinkering and making.

Related STEM Area: Engineering, problem-solving, creativity, critical thinking

NGSS Main Related Engineering Design Standard:

MS-ETS1-4. Develop a model to generate data for iterative testing and modification of a proposed object, tool, or process such that an optimal design can be achieved.

What students will do

  1. Students will design a shirt that will help them run faster.
  2. Students compare and contrast designs with classmates.
  3. Students participate in discussion with classmates.

Explore the creative process by thinking critically and experimenting.

Resources Needed

Various materials for experimentation, note taking materials, whiteboards, paper, pencils, etc.

How learning is assessed

  1. Students have designed a shirt that they believe will help them run faster.
  2. Students have compared their own design to classmate's designs.
  3. Students have discussed their ideas with classmates.
