About this resource

This thinking challenge should intrigue students and encourage them to come up with multiple solutions to the thinking challenge. This thinking challenge can be brought to life by covering a handle to a door or even removing it. Students can examine the door and test solutions. This may help them visualize the problem and help them come up with various ideas. Students may use a tool to open the door or invent a new device that would open the door. To take it one step further students can build a prototype and test their idea on an actual door.

Modifications for All Learners: Verbal and written directions should be given. Developing a prototype of one of their ideas may challenge students further.

Related Curriculum / Common Core Standard

AASL Main Standard(s):

V. EXPLORE Discover and innovate in a growth mindset developed through experience and reflection. B. Create - Learners construct new knowledge by: 1. Problem solving through cycles of design, implementation, and reflection. 2. Persisting through self-directed pursuits by tinkering and making.

II. INCLUDE Demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to inclusiveness and respect for diversity in the learning community. C. Share - Learners exhibit empathy with and tolerance for diverse ideas by: 1. Engaging in informed conversation and active debate.

Related STEM Area: Engineering, problem-solving, creativity, critical thinking

NGSS Main Related Engineering Design Standard:

K-2-ETS1-1. Ask questions, make observations, and gather information about a situation people want to change to define a simple problem that can be solved through the development of a new or improved object or tool.

What students will do

  1. Students will identify a way to open a latched door if there was no handle.
  2. Students will work in groups to brainstorm potential solutions to this problem.
  3. Students will select the best solution based on discussion within groups.

Explore the creative process by thinking critically and experimenting.

Resources Needed

Note-taking materials (whiteboards, chalkboards, pencil & paper), Sample door if desired, various materials for experimenting. 3-D printer optional

How learning is assessed

  1. Students have identified a way to open a latched door if there was no handle.
  2. Each student group has brainstormed potential solutions to this problem.
  3. Each group has selected their "best" solution based on discussion within groups.
