About this resource

Students will design a survival plan if you lived during the Ice Age or Prehistoric Era. Students can get creative with this problem. They may choose to do some research about these eras or the instructor can provide information. Students may come up with ideas for shelter, food, water, etc. They can work individually or in teams. After coming up with a plan students may choose to compare and contrast ideas and modify original ideas.

Modifications for All Learners: Verbal and written directions should be given. Students can choose to verbally explain their ideas and choices rather than sketch their ideas.

Related Curriculum / Common Core Standard

AASL Main Standard(s):

IV. CURATE Make meaning for oneself and others by collecting, organizing, and sharing resources of personal relevance. A. Think - Learners act on an information need by: 2. Identifying possible sources of information. 3. Making critical choices about information sources to use.

IV. CURATE Make meaning for oneself and others by collecting, organizing, and sharing resources of personal relevance. B. Create - Learners gather information appropriate to the task by: 1. Seeking a variety of sources.

Related STEM Area: Problem-solving, creativity, critical thinking

NGSS Main Related Engineering Design Standard:

MS-ETS1-2. Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.

What students will do

  1. Students will develop a survival plan for life during the ice age or pre-historic area.
  2. Students will work in groups to brainstorm potential problems and solutions for life during this time.
  3. Students will select the best survival plan based on discussion within groups.

Explore the creative process by thinking critically and experimenting.

Resources Needed

Note-taking materials (whiteboards, chalkboards, pencil & paper), computers for research.

How learning is assessed

  1. Students have developed a survival plan for life during the ice age or pre-historic area.
  2. Each student group has brainstormed potential problems and solutions for life during this time.
  3. Each group has selected their "best" survival plan based on discussion within groups.
