Making Literacy-Innovation Connections for Young Patrons in Rural Libraries

A simple universal layout for informational pages, projects and programs. Keep the title at the top, then tell the story below using text and images.

Welcome to the hub for the Literacy-Innovation Connections project, funded in part by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and piloted in 10 small rural libraries.

Librarians and children had great fun piloting the program, and the materials produced and refined for the pilot are now available to public and school libraries across the country.

Introduce the project in a natural, readable way.

This block is ideal for the first important section of a page. It can explain the idea, background, goals or context of a project without making the page feel like a database.

The image beside the text can be a photo, illustration, screenshot, infographic or any visual connected with the content.

Optional image caption.

Alternate image and text to keep longer pages interesting.

For the next section, the image moves to the left. This small change gives the page rhythm without creating a completely different layout for every piece of content.

Use as many of these blocks as needed. Two or three are usually enough for a standard subpage.

Example educational project image
Use a different image for each content section.

Sometimes one image deserves more space.

This variation works for a key illustration, project diagram, screenshot or program overview. It remains part of the same visual system, so the page still feels consistent.

Full-width visual with an optional caption.
Template idea

Copy this page, change the title and text, then replace the example images. Remove any block you do not need. The layout works equally well with one, two or several sections.
