The NSTA explains in this article how they choose the best STEM books for children. The winning books "invite STEM-like thinking" (and NSTA explains exactly what is meant by that), and appropriately represent the practices of science and engineering. The NSTA believes that using trade books "is the perfect way for students to build literacy skills while learning STEM content" (NSTA).
