Research Summary: Competencies for Information Professionals in Learning Labs and Makerspaces

"In order for these innovative programs and spaces to be sustainable [makerspaces and learning labs], it is essential that they are staffed by qualified professionals and support staff... The authors conducted a research project in order to identify the competencies required for professionals to perform innovative services in library or museum Learning Labs and Makerspaces. Identifying competencies desired for professionals in the learning spaces is significant in several ways. The findings will be used to generate implications for instructors in higher education so they can best prepare future professionals in the learning spaces. The results can also be used as a research-based framework for staff recruitment and training in Learning Labs and Makerspaces" (Koh & Abbas, 2014).
